What Remains
Daniel did the exercise that night. He sat in his apartment, in the dark, and he tried to remove the layers. First, the things he owned — no couch, no books, no screens. Then the job — no title, no salary, no busy days. Then the reputation — no one who knew his name, no one who was impressed.
It was harder than he expected. Every time he removed a layer, his mind reached for something else to hold onto. A memory. A number. A plan.
This is uncomfortable, he thought. It’s like standing with nothing on.
But slowly, something strange happened. Under all the layers, there was still… something. Not a thing. Not a name. Just a quiet sense of being there. Of noticing.
He sat with it for a long time. It wasn’t emptiness. It was more like a light that had been there all along, behind everything else.
The next morning, he went back to the café. Elias was already there.
„I did it,” Daniel said. „I removed everything. And something remained.”
Elias smiled. „That is what remains. Not a what — a who. The one who notices.”
