The Three Layers
„Let me give you a small exercise,” Elias said. „You don’t have to do it now. But think about it tonight.”
„I’m listening.”
„Imagine three layers,” Elias said, holding up three fingers. „The first layer is what you own. Your apartment. Your car. Your portfolio. Your crypto.”
Daniel smiled. The old man knew about crypto. Of course he did.
„The second layer is what you do. Your job. Your title. Your daily work.”
„The third layer is what people think of you. Your reputation. Your followers. The respect you have earned.”
„Now,” Elias said, „remove them. All three. Slowly. Like taking off a coat.”
Daniel imagined it. Apartment gone. Job gone. Reputation gone. It was uncomfortable, even just in his head.
„What remains?” Elias asked.
Daniel thought for a long moment. „I don’t know,” he said. „Nothing?”
„That,” said Elias, „is the wrong answer. But it is the answer almost everyone gives at first. And it is exactly why you feel empty.”
„What do you mean?”
„Because you have been confusing what you have with what you are.” Elias’s voice was gentle now. „The layers are not you. They are things around you. When you remove them, something remains. Something that was there before the apartment, before the job, before the money.”
Daniel’s chest felt tight. „And what is that?”
Elias smiled. „That is the question we are going to find out. But not today. Today, I only want you to notice one thing.”
„What?”
„That you could not answer ‘what are you worth’ — because you were looking in the wrong place. You were looking at your account. You should have been looking in the mirror.”
The old man stood up and put some money on the table.
„Same time tomorrow?” he asked.
Daniel nodded. „Same time tomorrow.”
Elias walked out of the café. Daniel watched him go, then looked at his phone. The screen was dark.
For the first time in months, he didn’t turn it on.
