At the print shop, the machines stopped at six, but closing took another hour. Someone had to clear the paper, check the orders and lock the storage room. Usually, the newest worker, Tessa, stayed behind while the others left.
Her first payment included only the hours when the machines were running. Tessa checked her notebook twice. Perhaps closing was included in the daily amount, she thought. However, the agreement she had received mentioned an hourly rate and said nothing about unpaid closing work.
She brought the notebook and agreement to the owner. Instead of accusing him, she asked which hours she should record. He looked surprised. The old system had copied the machine schedule into everyone's payment records. Tessa was relieved by the explanation, but she still asked when the missing amount would arrive.
The owner corrected her payment that week and added a separate closing line to the form. He also asked the other workers to check their records. On Friday, Tessa finished at seven as usual. This time, she wrote the final hour in the right place before putting away her pen. The work was no easier, but it was no longer disappearing between the machine and the door.
