When the warehouse supervisor retired, everyone expected Harun to apply for the position. He knew every route through the building and could usually find a missing order before the computer did. His brother had already started calling him 'the boss'.
Harun read the job description carefully. Most of the work involved meetings, staff schedules and reports. What he enjoyed was solving problems on the floor and teaching new workers how the stock system worked. He worried that refusing the promotion would sound like a lack of ambition.
During his review, he explained that he wanted more responsibility for training, not for managing the whole warehouse. His manager was quiet for a moment. Then she asked him to design a short training plan for the next group of employees. There was no new title yet, but they agreed to review the role and its pay after a trial period.
Harun's brother was disappointed by the news. Harun was too busy preparing useful examples to argue. On Monday, a new employee found a wrong label using one of his exercises. Harun crossed a confusing page out of the plan and began again. This was the kind of difficult work he had hoped for.
