When the Repair Shop Said No

The electric kettle in the staff kitchen stopped working on a rainy Monday. Jules volunteered to take it to a repair shop. He liked keeping objects in use and expected to return with a cheap solution that would impress his colleagues.

The technician examined it and shook her head. The damaged part was not available for that model. She could spend more time looking, but she could not promise a repair or a reasonable price. Jules asked whether another workshop might succeed. She gave him a name without pretending to know the answer.

The second workshop gave the same response. Jules returned to work disappointed. His colleagues had spent two days heating water in a borrowed pot, and nobody wanted another week of uncertainty. They agreed on a replacement that met their needs. Jules checked the local collection arrangements for the broken appliance instead of putting it in an ordinary bin.

On Friday, he made tea with the new kettle. A colleague teased him about losing his repair battle. Jules handed her a mug and said there had never been a battle, although he knew that was not entirely true. He had wanted the object to prove a point. Now he mainly wanted everyone to have hot water before the meeting.
