Malik had worn the same winter coat to work for years. When the lining tore, he hid the damage by keeping it on the back of his chair. He could buy a new coat, but every suitable one seemed either too thin or too formal.
His neighbour Jo offered to show him how to repair the lining. Malik expected a quick lesson. Instead, they spent an entire evening removing loose thread and cutting a patch to the right size. His first stitches were so uneven that Jo had to undo several of them.
'I thought repairing meant avoiding effort,' he admitted. Jo laughed. She explained that sometimes a repair was cheaper, sometimes it was interesting, and sometimes replacement made more sense. Malik continued because the coat fitted him well, not because he had to prove anything. They used orange thread, the strongest colour Jo had available.
At work, the lining flashed brightly when he took the coat off. A colleague asked whether it was a designer detail. Malik almost said yes, then described the slow evening at Jo's table. Later, he noticed a loose button and reached for his small sewing kit. This repair would still take patience, but at least he knew which end of the needle to thread.
