Every month, Alina's friends planned a weekend away. They called the trips cheap because they shared accommodation. Alina usually agreed, then came home surprised by the food, transport and activities that had never appeared in the first message.
This time, she asked the organiser, Ben, for a clearer list. He sent the room price again. Alina explained that she needed to understand the whole weekend, not just the beds. She worried that her question sounded unfriendly, particularly because Ben was doing the organising for free.
Ben called her that evening. He had not included his own spending either and was annoyed with himself. Together, they made two columns: agreed group costs and optional activities. The boat trip went in the second column. Breakfast supplies stayed in the first. Nobody had to explain why they chose one activity over another.
On Sunday, Alina skipped the boat and walked along the harbour with another friend. Ben joined them after deciding he preferred a quiet morning. The weekend was not suddenly inexpensive, but its price no longer changed with every conversation. When the group suggested another trip, Alina answered with a question about the two columns rather than an automatic yes or an anxious excuse.
