On her first week at the repair centre, Bea received a badge that said 'Trainee'. She turned it around whenever customers approached. At her previous job, she had trained other people. Starting again at forty felt like wearing a sign that announced everything she did not know.
One customer asked her a question about a damaged speaker. Bea guessed the answer rather than call her supervisor. The guess was wrong, and the supervisor had to correct the repair estimate. Nobody shouted, but Bea felt worse than she would have felt admitting uncertainty.
At lunch, the supervisor showed her his oldest notebook. It contained basic drawings, crossed out answers and a large reminder to check before promising. He still kept it because new equipment could make anyone a beginner. He asked Bea to wear the badge properly and use it as permission to ask questions, not as an apology.
That afternoon, Bea told a customer she needed to check a detail. The customer waited without complaint. By closing time, she had written three useful notes and made no promises she could not support. She still missed being the experienced person in the room. However, she left her badge facing forward when she hung her jacket by the door.
