The Choir Records an Honest Rehearsal

Our community choir wanted a recording for people who were thinking of joining. Felix, who owned a good microphone, offered to help. We spent an entire evening repeating the same song, trying to remove every wrong note. By the end, the recording sounded careful, but we looked completely exhausted.

Felix played it back the following week. It was certainly tidy, yet something was missing. During normal rehearsals, we laughed, asked questions and sometimes stopped to find our places. None of that appeared in the recording. I wondered whether a nervous beginner would hear it and decide that we were too professional.

We agreed to record part of an ordinary rehearsal instead. Our conductor explained a difficult section, and the microphone caught someone asking to hear it again. The second attempt was better than the first, although it was not perfect. Before using the recording, we checked that everyone included had agreed.

The finished clip contained music, a short explanation and a little laughter. Two new members arrived the next month and mentioned the repeated section. They had liked hearing how we learned, not just how we sounded afterwards. We kept the polished version in our private folder. It still mattered to us, but it told a different story.
