The residents had permission to paint the wall beside their community centre. Each volunteer arrived with a different idea, and the first planning session produced more arguments than drawings. Lucia wanted bright flowers. Ben preferred a scene of the local river. Others simply wanted to hide the ugly brown paint.
Their budget allowed only three large tins of colour, plus white. Instead of voting on finished pictures, Lucia suggested making a shared design from simple shapes. The volunteers chose blue, yellow and red, then tested mixtures on spare wood. Ben discovered that his river could run between Lucia's flowers.
Painting day was less peaceful than the new design suggested. A red section spread beyond its pencil line, and somebody painted over part of a leaf. Lucia was ready to stop everyone. Then she remembered that this was a wall made by neighbours, not a private painting with helpful strangers.
They repaired the clearest mistakes and left a few uneven edges. At the bottom, they painted the date and the name of their street rather than individual names. Weeks later, Lucia saw a child tracing the river's path through the flowers with one finger. The picture was being used in a way none of their plans had predicted.
