The writing group met above a bakery, where the smell of bread often interrupted serious discussion. This week, the leader asked everyone to bring a piece of everyday writing. Ada brought a shopping list from her coat pocket. It contained six items and a reminder to call her brother.
The task was to turn the list into a short poem without adding more than twenty words. Ada thought this was a trick. How could potatoes and washing powder become poetry? She read the list again and noticed that each item suggested something she had done during the previous week.
She moved the reminder about her brother to the beginning. Then she placed tea and two cups at the end, although cups had not been on the original list. Between them, she left a space. The poem did not explain the whole situation, but it suggested a conversation waiting to happen.
When Ada read it aloud, nobody laughed at the potatoes. Another writer asked why she had chosen two cups instead of one. Ada liked being asked about a choice rather than whether her poem was good. She put the page back in her pocket. On the way home, she bought the groceries and made the phone call.
