Our amateur football team ordered new shirts with silver numbers on pale grey fabric. In the online picture, they looked smart. When the shirts arrived, we were pleased with the material and fit. The problem became clear during our first evening match under the lamps beside the pitch.
From the edge of the field, the numbers were almost invisible. Our volunteer reporter kept confusing the players, and the referee asked us to change. We wore old training shirts instead. I had chosen the design, so I spent most of the match wondering how to explain the wasted money.
The supplier replied to my email the next day. The shirts had been printed exactly as ordered, so a free replacement was not available. However, the company could add dark borders around the existing numbers for a smaller charge. I brought this option to the team rather than making another decision alone.
We agreed to pay for the change from our social fund and postpone one team dinner. Before sending all the shirts, we tested a single sample outdoors after sunset. This time, every number was clear. The shirts still looked smart, but we no longer judged them only in a bright photograph on a screen.
