Borrowed Bowls for a Sunday Match

Helen joined a lawn bowls club because its Sunday sessions fitted her working hours. She knew almost nothing about the game and borrowed a set of bowls from the equipment cupboard. The bowls curved across the grass instead of travelling straight, which surprised her every single time.

An experienced member, Roy, explained the basic rules and suggested watching the marks on each bowl. Helen listened, but she still sent one in the wrong direction. It stopped far from the target. She wished that everyone would look away, yet Roy only asked what she had noticed.

Helen admitted that she had been thinking about the people watching rather than the bowl in her hand. For the next turn, she checked the mark before starting. The result was not brilliant, but it was closer. By the end of the session, she could explain why her first attempt had gone wrong.

The club invited her to join a friendly match the following Sunday. She agreed on one condition: nobody should introduce her as their secret star player. Roy laughed and wrote beginner beside her name. Helen liked that word better than she expected. It described where she was without making any claims about where she had to finish.
