Tariq wanted to make a simple bowl in his evening pottery class. He had drawn a neat design in his notebook, with straight sides and a narrow base. Unfortunately, the wet clay did not share his plans. One side became much thicker than the other while he was shaping it.
He considered starting again, but the tutor asked what else the shape could become. Tariq studied the heavy side and imagined a handle. It would no longer be the bowl he had planned, and he disliked giving up his original idea. Still, the class ended in forty minutes.
He pulled part of the clay outwards and made a wide handle. The result looked more like a small jug than a bowl. When the piece was finally fired, it leaned slightly to the left. Tariq decided not to use it for drinks, but he liked the rough pattern along its edge.
At home, the jug found a place on his desk, holding pencils. His sister asked whether he could make another one exactly like it. Tariq laughed because he had no idea how to repeat the mistake. For his next class, he brought two drawings: the design he wanted and a second possibility in case the clay disagreed.
