A Longer Commute for Better Pay

Damon received an offer from a factory on the other side of the city. The pay was higher than at his current workplace. His friends congratulated him before he had accepted, as if the larger number had already made the choice obvious.

He studied the shift times and tried the journey on a weekday. Getting there required two buses and a long walk. The return connection was worse. He arrived home too late to help his father prepare dinner, something they usually did together without much discussion.

Damon wrote down the travel costs and spoke to the factory about possible shifts. They could not offer different hours. His current job had problems too, including limited training, so staying was not an easy victory. He spent a restless evening comparing two imperfect arrangements rather than searching for one perfect answer.

He declined the offer, then asked his current supervisor about learning another machine. That conversation produced no immediate promise. At home, his father asked whether he had turned down the job because of dinner. Damon said dinner was part of it, but not all of it. They peeled potatoes in silence for a while. The decision still felt expensive, yet it also felt like his own, which was something the congratulatory messages had almost hidden.
