A Congratulations Card and a Map

When Priya became regional manager, her former colleague Matt bought a congratulations card. He was genuinely pleased for her, but writing the message took longer than choosing the card. They had started at the delivery office together. Now her job title sounded important, while his remained unchanged.

That afternoon, Matt was asked to help a new driver understand the local routes. The official map showed roads but not the awkward entrances or the buildings with similar names. Matt drew a simpler map and added notes from experience. The driver returned later without making the mistakes new staff usually made.

Matt looked at the map beside Priya's card. He did not want to pretend that recognition or pay no longer mattered. He wanted more of both. But he could also name the expertise he already had, rather than describing his career only as the promotion he had not received.

He finished the card with a warm, ordinary message. Then he asked his supervisor whether updating the training maps could become a recognised part of his work, with time set aside for it. They arranged a discussion for the following week. Priya's promotion remained good news. Matt's next step was still uncertain, but at least it was no longer hidden behind somebody else's title.
