At the sandwich bar, customers left tips in a glass jar beside the till. At closing, the two counter workers divided the money. Behind them, Anik washed dishes, prepared ingredients and cleaned the kitchen, but he never received a share.
He had assumed there was a reason until a customer said, 'That is for everyone who made our lunch.' Anik mentioned the comment during the quiet afternoon break. The counter workers were surprised. The arrangement had existed before any of them joined, and nobody had questioned it.
They asked the owner to discuss it with the whole team. One counter worker pointed out that serving difficult customers involved extra effort. Anik agreed, then described the work customers did not see. They needed a rule that recognised the team without pretending every task was identical.
For a trial month, they agreed to divide the tips according to hours worked during the shifts that received them. The owner wrote the arrangement down and set a date to review it together.
On the first evening, Anik bought a pastry on his way home with part of his share. The amount was small. What stayed with him was the meeting itself: he had described his work, others had listened, and an old habit had finally become a choice.
