The Sewing Machine with a History

At a secondhand market, Beth found a sewing machine at a surprisingly low price. The seller said it had belonged to his mother but admitted he knew nothing about its condition. Beth turned the wheel and imagined making curtains for her new flat.

She asked whether she could have it checked before paying. The seller agreed to meet her at a nearby workshop. There, a repairer found that the machine needed cleaning, adjustment and a missing part. His estimate brought the total close to the price of a serviced machine in his own shop.

Beth felt disappointed, as if somebody had taken away her bargain. The repairer explained that the old machine might work well afterwards, but he could not ignore the hours needed to prepare it. The seller offered a further reduction, then admitted that he mainly wanted the heavy object out of his hallway.

Beth chose the serviced machine instead. It came with a demonstration, and she could test the stitches before buying. The seller left with his mother's machine and the repairer's number.

That evening, Beth made a crooked curtain seam and carefully unpicked it. The machine worked perfectly; the mistake was entirely hers. Strangely, this was reassuring. She could concentrate on learning rather than wondering whether every uneven stitch was hiding another expense.
