Every day, the large office clock showed five o'clock before the clock on Celia's computer. She usually stayed until her computer showed the correct time. Her colleague Bruno always left when the wall clock reached five. Neither mentioned the difference for several weeks.
One afternoon, a customer arrived for an appointment and found Bruno already putting on his jacket. Celia checked the booking. The customer was exactly on time, but the wall clock was eight minutes fast. Bruno took off his jacket and welcomed her.
After the appointment, he asked who checked the clock. Nobody knew. It had been there longer than any of them. Celia brought a small step ladder, and the office manager adjusted the hands while she held the ladder steady.
The next day, Bruno looked at both clocks before leaving. They agreed at last. He smiled at Celia and said he had gained eight minutes for tomorrow's final appointment. She was simply pleased that visitors would no longer appear late when they were not.
