Our friend Saskia was moving to another town, and we wanted to organize a large goodbye evening. We talked about a restaurant, decorations, and a long list of guests. Saskia looked tired whenever we asked her to choose between our ideas.
Finally, her friend Mo asked what she actually wanted. Saskia said she had boxes everywhere and only one free evening before leaving. She would prefer four friends, simple food, and no speeches. She also asked us not to bring presents that needed packing.
We arrived with sandwiches and sat on the only rug that was not inside a box. Everyone brought one funny memory to tell, but nobody had to stand up. After eating, we helped carry three empty boxes down to the recycling area.
At the door, Saskia gave us her new address. Instead of promising to call every day, we chose one Sunday for a first video chat. The goodbye was short because her taxi was waiting. Our next meeting already had a place on the calendar.
