Every morning, Daria cleaned the windows of an office building before the workers arrived. On the glass beside the entrance, a sign listed the building manager, the security team and the designer. Her cleaning company appeared at the bottom, without any names.
She had never minded until a visitor asked whether she was waiting for someone. Daria held up her cloth. The visitor looked surprised, as if clean windows simply happened. On the bus home, she wondered why she had felt so embarrassed.
The following week, the manager asked everyone for ideas to improve the entrance. Daria suggested adding the names of the people who maintained it. She expected an argument about space. Instead, he asked her to check the spelling with her colleagues. One colleague preferred not to be named, and Daria respected that.
The new sign was small. It did not change her wages or make the early mornings warmer. However, when another visitor stopped beside her, he read it and said, 'Good morning, Daria.' She answered while reaching for the highest corner. For once, she did not need to explain why she belonged there.
