For the final lesson of a speaking course, each adult student had to explain a familiar object. Most people chose books or kitchen tools. Harun brought a roll of packing tape from his job at a warehouse. He knew exactly how to use it.
At home, he prepared a long speech about different kinds of tape. In class, however, he forgot the second sentence. He stared at his notes while the other students waited. The teacher asked him to show the group what he did at work.
Harun put a small cardboard box on the table. As his hands moved, the words came more easily. He explained how to close the box and why loose ends of tape could cause problems. Then he invited another student to try.
The student used too much tape, which gave Harun something else to explain. His presentation lasted three minutes instead of five, but everyone understood it. He left the long speech in his folder and carried the little box home as his first successful teaching tool.
