At forty-two, Nela joined an evening sewing class. She wanted to repair her work shirts instead of buying new ones. For the first lesson, everyone brought an old shirt and a small box of sewing tools. Nela brought a blue shirt with one button missing.
The teacher, Ada, showed the group how to put thread through a needle. Nela could hardly see the tiny hole. She tried several times while the people beside her began sewing. Then Ada moved a bright lamp closer to her table.
With better light, Nela finished the first step quickly. She sewed the button carefully, but pulled the thread too tightly. The cloth looked strange around it. Ada showed her how to leave a little space under the button.
Nela tried again. This time, the shirt closed easily. She wore it to work the next morning. Nobody noticed the new button, which pleased her very much. Her repair looked just like the others.
