Dad became impatient because we kept stopping him. My sister explained that we could not remember a recipe we did not understand. We asked him to show us one step at a time. I would write, and she would check each amount.
The lesson took longer, but we finally produced two clear pages. Dad read them and added a note about the small pan he always used. Then he told us who had taught him the recipe. That story went on a separate page.
A month later, we invited him to dinner and made the dish ourselves. He asked one question about the taste, then finished his plate. My sister gave him a copy of our notes. On the cover, I had written, 'Please speak slowly, Dad.'
