Darius had to give a five-minute talk at his public speaking club. He chose the history of his neighbourhood and prepared twenty slides. During practice at home, the talk lasted eighteen minutes. Speaking faster reduced it to fourteen, but even he could not follow everything he was saying.
He asked another member, Lin, to listen. She stopped him after the third slide and asked what he most wanted the audience to remember. Darius named an old footbridge that residents had saved from removal. Lin suggested building the talk around that one example instead of summarising a hundred years.
Cutting the slides felt harder than writing them. Darius had spent days finding the information, and leaving it out seemed wasteful. Then he remembered that the audience had not asked to see his research process. They needed a clear story that could fit into the time they had agreed to give him.
On the evening of his talk, he used three photographs and finished with ten seconds remaining. Afterwards, someone asked where the bridge was, and another person wanted to know more about the residents' campaign. Darius sent them a longer reading list the next day. The missing slides had not disappeared; they had simply found a more suitable place.
