Our evening map-reading class usually worked indoors with printed maps. For the final session, our tutor planned a short walk through the town. We would take turns leading the group without using our phones. I volunteered first because I had studied the route carefully and recognised most street names.
At the second junction, I turned left instead of right. Nobody stopped me. After a few minutes, the buildings no longer matched the map, and I began to feel uncomfortable. The tutor asked what evidence would help us decide where we were. I wanted an answer, not another question.
We looked for street signs and compared the shape of the next junction with the printed streets. A small square beside a church finally gave us a clear location. My turn had taken us away from the planned route, but a narrow street would bring us back without repeating every step.
I expected the tutor to discuss my mistake for the rest of the evening. Instead, she asked me to explain how we had identified it. Another student took the map, and we continued. At the end, my notes contained fewer arrows and more questions: What can I see? What should be here? Those questions felt useful beyond the classroom.
