For years, the framed photograph on Dean's desk showed him, his daughter Mia and her mother. After the divorce, he kept it because it recorded a happy afternoon they had genuinely shared. When his new partner, Sara, moved in, he wondered whether the photograph should disappear.
He put it in a drawer before she arrived with her boxes. Mia noticed during her next visit. She asked whether her mother was now someone they were not allowed to remember. Dean realised that his quiet attempt to avoid an uncomfortable conversation had created a much bigger one.
He brought out the photograph and explained that her mother would always be part of Mia's family. Later, he asked Sara how she felt about keeping it on the shelf. Sara said she did not expect the years before her arrival to vanish. She would simply like space for new memories too.
The photograph returned, and nobody moved it again. A few weeks later, they took another picture while making a terrible paper kite in the living room. Mia chose a frame for that one herself. Dean placed it beside the older photograph, not in front of it. The shelf looked different, but it did not demand that anyone choose which part of the family story was allowed to remain.
