The Envelope We Opened Slowly

After their mother's funeral, brothers Peter and Ian found an envelope marked for my sons. Peter wanted to open it immediately. Ian put it in a kitchen drawer and said they should wait. Within minutes, they were arguing about an envelope whose contents neither had seen.

Peter feared that waiting would make the letter more frightening. Ian feared it would contain instructions he was not ready to follow. They had spent the week making arrangements and answering calls. Neither had asked the other how much more he could manage that day.

Peter suggested opening it together on Sunday morning, with no visitors expected afterwards. Ian agreed, provided they could stop reading if either needed a break. They left the envelope in the drawer and ordered dinner. For the first time that week, they talked about something other than practical arrangements.

On Sunday, the letter turned out to contain a short memory of each son's birth and a request that they stay in touch. They read it slowly, passing the paper between them. Afterwards, Ian made two copies so neither brother had to keep the only one. Peter was glad they had waited. Not because Sunday was painless, but because they had chosen the moment together and made room for whatever they might feel.
