On the first day of each month, Clara and Denis discussed their household spending. Rent and bills were easy to name. The difficult part was everything else. Clara wanted a better vacuum cleaner, while Denis hoped to replace their scratched dining table.
Each believed the other purchase could wait. Their discussions became lists of reasons why their own discomfort mattered more. One evening, Clara noticed that they were arguing beside a pile of catalogues they had not opened carefully. Neither knew what a suitable replacement would cost.
They wrote both wishes on an envelope marked 'Not Yet'. Over the next month, they tested a friend's vacuum cleaner and visited a secondhand furniture shop. Clara found the new machine heavier than hers. Denis discovered that a table cover hid the scratches well enough for now. Neither purchase disappeared from the envelope, but the urgency faded.
At their next discussion, they set a date to consider the choices again. Then they put the catalogues away and ate at the scratched table. Waiting had not magically increased their income or fixed the vacuum cleaner. It had simply stopped two possible purchases from taking over every evening. Denis dropped a crumb, and Clara pointed at the brush without saying a word.
