Six months after her husband died, Paula decided to sort his clothes. Her sister came to help and brought bags for the charity shop. They worked slowly, telling stories about shirts from holidays and a jacket that had never fitted properly. Then Paula reached his old blue jumper.
Her sister held out a bag, but Paula pulled the jumper towards her. She suddenly felt foolish. She had asked for help, yet now she wanted everything to stop. Her sister noticed her expression and put the bag on the floor. They went into the kitchen without deciding anything.
Over tea, Paula said that keeping clothes seemed useless, but giving them away felt too final. Her sister suggested a third choice. They could leave some things undecided. There was no visitor arriving who needed the cupboard, and no reason to finish the task that afternoon.
Paula found a cardboard box and wrote not yet on the lid. The jumper went inside, along with a scarf and two shirts. They donated the clothes she felt ready to release. A month later, the box was still under her bed. Paula did not regard it as unfinished work. For now, it was simply the place where she had allowed herself to wait.
