The Friend Behind the Camera

Whenever their walking group stopped for a photograph, Daniel offered to take it. He thought it was a useful way to join in, especially because the others had known each other longer. Over several months, he collected dozens of pictures in which he never appeared.

At the end of summer, the group made a small album. Daniel looked through it at Priya's house and felt an unexpected sadness. There were pictures of every walk he remembered, but the pages seemed to show a group that existed without him. He closed the album carefully.

Priya noticed and asked whether a photograph was missing. Daniel wanted to say no. Instead, he explained that he sometimes felt more like a helpful visitor than a member. Priya was surprised. She had assumed he disliked being photographed and had tried to respect that preference.

At the next walk, Priya brought a small phone stand. Everyone gathered on the bridge while a timer counted down. Daniel stood near the edge until another walker pulled him gently towards the middle. The picture caught him laughing at the sudden movement. Later, Priya placed it on the album's first page. Beneath it, she wrote everyone's name, including the photographer who had finally stepped into the picture.
