The Cousin Who Remembered My Name

At large family gatherings, everyone called Adrian little Adrian because his uncle had the same name. The name had made sense when he was six. At thirty-two, it made him feel as if his opinions still belonged at the children's table, beside the spilled juice.

Before the next gathering, he asked his cousin Mara for help. He did not want a dramatic announcement or an argument with his uncle. He simply wanted people to use his name without the extra word. Mara agreed to introduce him to a new relative as Adrian.

During lunch, an aunt asked little Adrian to fetch more plates. Mara calmly said that Adrian was already helping her. Later, when his uncle used the old name, Adrian explained that he preferred the shorter version now. His uncle looked surprised, then joked that he might enjoy being called big Adrian himself.

Not everyone remembered immediately. Adrian corrected people without raising his voice, and Mara supported him without turning each mistake into a lesson. By dessert, the new habit was beginning to feel ordinary. On the way home, Adrian thanked his cousin. She said she had only used his name. That was true, but it had helped him speak as an adult in a room where he had always felt smaller.
