Two Lessons at the Same Table

At a small clothing workshop, veteran cutter Agnes struggled with the new ordering software. The youngest employee, Joel, showed her which buttons to press. He spoke kindly, but Agnes still felt uncomfortable needing help after so many years in the trade.

Later that day, Joel cut a piece of expensive cloth in the wrong direction. Agnes stopped him before he used the rest. She laid two pieces beside each other and showed how the surface changed in the light. Joel admitted he had never understood why direction mattered.

They agreed to exchange short lessons during the training time their employer provided. Agnes would explain fabric choices and cutting techniques. Joel would help her practise entering orders and correcting mistakes on the computer. Neither would work unpaid evenings to make the arrangement happen.

The first session was unexpectedly funny. Agnes kept calling one button 'the little suitcase', and Joel could not remember the name of a common tool. They wrote each other's descriptions beside the correct terms.

After a month, both needed less help, though neither had become an expert in the other's area. Agnes still asked Joel difficult computer questions. Joel still brought unusual cloth to her table before cutting. Their experience was different, not arranged neatly from valuable to worthless according to age. The workshop gained two more capable workers without either pretending to know everything.
