People often asked Ivo to paint signs because he had attractive handwriting. Usually, the signs were small, and he accepted a meal or a favour in return. Then a cafe owner asked him to paint a whole blue wall with a long menu.
Ivo said yes before discussing payment. At home, he measured the design on paper and realised the wall would take several days. He would also need special paint and time away from his regular job. He felt trapped by his own quick answer.
The next morning, he returned with a written estimate. The owner frowned and reminded him that painting was his hobby. Ivo agreed that he enjoyed it. He explained, however, that this project required materials and hours he could not offer as a favour. He could do a smaller sign within the cafe's budget, or they could cancel.
The owner chose the smaller sign. Ivo painted it carefully, received the agreed payment and left the large wall blue. For a while, he worried that the owner was disappointed. Then he remembered the free evenings he had almost promised away. He used one to paint a strange green bird that nobody had ordered and nobody needed to approve.
