Every visit to his grandmother followed the same pattern: tea, biscuits and questions about school. Seventeen-year-old Alex loved her, but he had begun to answer in single words. One Saturday, she asked him why he smiled at his phone more often than at her.
Alex almost replied that she would not understand. Instead, he showed her the online building game he played with friends. She asked why his house had no windows. He explained that he had spent all his money on a huge roof. His grandmother found this extremely funny.
She wanted to try building a room herself. Alex reached across several times to correct her choices, until she asked him to stop moving her fingers. She could learn slowly if he allowed her to make mistakes. He apologised and explained only what she asked about next.
By the end of the visit, she had made a room with twelve windows and nowhere to put a bed. They laughed together and took a picture of it. At their next meeting, she asked about his friends in the game. Alex had more to tell her than usual. Later, he asked her to teach him the card game she played with her neighbours, and this time he understood why patient instructions mattered.
