The Spare Key Between Us

When Jules began looking after her neighbour's cat, Mrs Bell gave her a spare key. Jules was pleased to be trusted. She watered the plants, cleaned the bowls and sent a photograph each evening. By the end of the week, the cat followed her around the kitchen.

After Mrs Bell returned, Jules forgot to give back the key. One afternoon, she noticed a parcel outside the neighbour's door. Wanting to protect it from the rain, she let herself in and placed it on the table. Mrs Bell was upstairs and came down looking alarmed.

Jules explained what she had done and expected a thank you. Instead, Mrs Bell said that the key had only been for the week away. Jules felt embarrassed. Her helpful intention had not given her permission to enter whenever she thought it was useful. She returned the key immediately.

The next day, Jules left a short apology through the letterbox. Mrs Bell knocked that evening and invited her for tea. They agreed that any future visits would need a message first, even if a key was available. A month later, Mrs Bell asked her to feed the cat again. This time, they wrote down the dates together. Jules was still trusted, but now they both understood exactly what that trust allowed.
