When Ed retired from repairing clocks, he advertised his large workbench. His daughter thought he should keep it in case he missed the work. Ed said he wanted space, but he kept cleaning the bench and delaying replies from interested buyers.
Finally, a young repairer named Sal came to see it. She examined the drawers and measured the height. Ed began describing every mark on the surface. One came from a difficult job, another from an apprentice's mistake. Sal listened politely, though she clearly needed a workbench rather than its complete history.
They agreed on a price and a collection day. After she left, Ed realised that selling the bench would not erase the work he had done. Keeping it would not bring the workshop back either. He chose a few small tools for occasional repairs and packed the rest as part of the sale, exactly as they had agreed.
The empty corner looked strange for several weeks. Ed put a comfortable chair there but rarely used it. Then Sal sent a photograph of the bench in her workshop, already covered with tools. He noticed a familiar stain beside her lamp and smiled. He did not need the bench to remain empty and perfect in his house. Someone was finally making it untidy again.
