Nora remembered the tune her grandmother used to sing, but only three words of the song. When her own daughter asked to hear it, she hummed the melody and invented the rest. The child liked it, yet Nora felt she was losing a small part of her family.
She called her older brother, who remembered different words. According to him, the song mentioned a horse. Nora was certain it contained a bird. They spent an evening arguing cheerfully about which animal belonged in their grandmother's kitchen, where she had sung while washing plates.
Finally, they asked their aunt. She laughed and explained that their grandmother had never sung the same version twice. Some nights the bird became a horse, and sometimes the song included whichever child was refusing to go to bed. There was no complete original for them to recover.
Nora told her daughter this story at bedtime. Together, they created a verse about a sleepy elephant who could not find a large enough blanket. Nora recorded it and sent it to her brother. He replied with a verse about a horse who borrowed the blanket. The song had not returned exactly as Nora remembered, but it had returned to its old job: bringing the family together before the lights went out.
