The Family Tree Had Empty Branches

For an adult language class, Owen had to describe his family using a simple family tree. He enjoyed the course until he saw the worksheet. He had grown up with several different carers and could not place the people who mattered to him into the printed boxes.

He considered inventing a traditional family to make the exercise easier. Instead, he spoke to the teacher after class. She asked whether he would prefer another topic, but Owen did not want to disappear from the conversation. He wanted a way to tell the truth without explaining his entire childhood.

At home, he drew a map instead of a tree. His former neighbour, who had taught him to ride a bike, appeared beside a park. A woman who still called every Friday appeared beside a telephone. He added his closest friend near the flat they had once shared.

When Owen presented the map, he described what each person had given him: time, encouragement, somewhere safe to stay. Nobody asked him to fill the missing branches. Afterwards, another student said she might draw a similar map because her important people also lived outside the usual boxes. Owen kept the worksheet, but used its blank side for notes. He no longer needed the printed tree to introduce himself.
