For ten years, cousins Rosa and Elena had attended the town dance together. This year, Elena bought two tickets as usual. Rosa thanked her but did not offer to pay. Instead, she stared at the tickets as if the date had been printed in a language she could not read.
Eventually, Rosa admitted that she no longer enjoyed the dance. The music was too loud, and she disliked staying until midnight. She had gone the previous year because she did not want to disappoint Elena. Elena felt hurt, especially when she remembered how often Rosa had checked her phone.
They sat in uncomfortable silence before Elena asked what Rosa would actually enjoy doing together. Rosa suggested an evening walk followed by pancakes at home. It sounded nothing like their old tradition. Still, Elena agreed to try it, and invited a colleague to use the second dance ticket.
The walk happened on a cool Thursday. They talked more than they ever could in the crowded hall, and Rosa made pancakes shaped like badly drawn animals. Elena enjoyed the dance on Saturday too. On Sunday, she sent her cousin a photo of her tired feet. Rosa replied with a picture of a fresh pancake. Neither evening had needed to replace the other.
