A Noticeboard That People Could Actually Read

The community hall noticeboard was full of colourful posters. There were classes, meetings and volunteer opportunities, yet residents kept asking the receptionist what was happening. Martin offered to redesign the board. He thought the answer would be larger letters and fewer colours, so he brought paper and a ruler.

Before changing anything, he watched several people use the board. A woman looked for events on Saturday but could not separate current notices from old ones. A man found a class he liked but could not locate its contact details. The problem involved more than the size of the writing.

Martin sorted the notices by date and created a small section for regular weekly activities. He asked each organiser to include the time, location and contact method in the same place. Notices without a clear date went into a folder behind the desk until someone could check them properly.

A week later, the board looked less colourful but had more empty space. The receptionist still answered questions, although they were now mostly about joining rather than finding events. Martin put a removal date on the back of each poster and arranged a weekly check. The redesign was useful, but keeping the information current would be an ongoing job.
