Sophie posted a funny picture of her friend Lewis asleep during a film night. His mouth was open, and a bowl balanced on his knee. Their friends added laughing faces. Sophie expected Lewis to laugh too, but he sent her a private message asking her to remove it.
She nearly replied that everyone knew it was only a joke. Then she remembered how carefully Lewis avoided being photographed. She took the picture down before answering. When she asked if they could talk, he agreed, although his first few words were quieter than usual.
Lewis explained that the picture reminded him of photos people had shared to embarrass him at school. Sophie had not known that, but she could see that knowing was not necessary. He had asked her to stop. She apologised without telling him that he should feel differently about it.
At their next film night, Sophie held up her phone and asked who wanted a group photo. Lewis offered to take it instead. Nobody questioned his choice. Later, he sent Sophie a picture of the empty bowls with a message saying that these guests never complained. She laughed, then asked whether she could share it. His answer came back with three laughing faces and a clear yes.
