The Gift Collection in the Drawer

A bright envelope travelled around the office every time someone had a birthday. People wrote their names beside the amounts they gave. When several birthdays came close together, Noor began worrying about the envelope before it even reached her desk.

She was helping her younger brother with rent for a few months. She did not want the whole office to know, and she liked her colleagues too much to seem ungenerous. One morning, she put more money into a collection than she felt comfortable spending, then skipped her usual lunch.

The colleague organising the gifts noticed her hesitation the next time. In private, Noor explained that public amounts made giving feel like a test. The organiser had thought the list was simply convenient. She agreed to replace it with an envelope kept in a drawer, where contributions could be made privately. The messages on the birthday card would remain separate.

At the next birthday, Noor gave a smaller amount and wrote a warm message. The present was modest, but the colleague receiving it laughed happily at the card. Nothing in the room suggested that anyone had measured Noor's friendship. Later, the organiser quietly thanked her. She had also been struggling to keep up and had not known how to change a system she had started.
