Who Keeps the Kitchen Table

When their shared rental ended, friends Lina and Gwen had to divide the furniture. Most items belonged clearly to one person. The kitchen table was different. They had bought it together, carried it upstairs together and both wanted it for their next home.

Lina suggested paying Gwen half the original price. Gwen felt that was too little because tables had become more expensive. Lina pointed to the marks they had made on the surface. Within minutes, a useful piece of furniture had become evidence of who had been the better housemate.

They stopped the discussion and measured their new kitchens separately. Lina discovered that the table would block a cupboard in her flat. She felt embarrassed after arguing so strongly. Gwen still had space for it, but she could not pay much at once. They checked similar used tables and agreed on an amount and two payment dates.

On moving day, Lina helped carry the table downstairs. They found a tiny paper star stuck underneath from a dinner they barely remembered. Gwen gave it to Lina, who taped it inside a box. Their agreement had not depended on proving who loved the table more. It depended on space, condition and a payment they both understood. The star was easier to divide: Gwen already had another on her sleeve.
