In the community choir, the same people always stood together. New members stayed near the door, while old friends formed a group beside the piano. When the practice ended, the two groups usually left without speaking to each other.
The leader, Bea, noticed this and changed the warm-up activity. She asked everyone to stand in a circle beside someone they did not know well. Each pair had two minutes to choose a song they both remembered from childhood.
There were some quiet moments, then more and more voices filled the room. Alan and Priya discovered that their mothers had sung the same simple tune. They remembered different words, so they sang both versions and laughed at the strange difference.
After practice, Priya invited Alan to join the others for tea. He brought his notebook because he wanted to write down her version. The chairs were still in a circle when Bea returned to collect her coat. This time, nobody was standing by the door.
