Megan answered with short words and began to sound angry. Ella thought she had done something wrong. Finally, Megan closed her book and explained that she needed twenty quiet minutes. After that, they could talk with the lights off.
They tried the plan the next evening. Ella wrote funny questions in a notebook while Megan read. When the twenty minutes ended, Megan placed her book under the bed. Ella's first question was about the worst sandwich Megan had ever eaten.
Their quiet talk soon became loud laughter. Their aunt knocked on the door and asked them to lower their voices. The cousins agreed to continue at breakfast. Ella added one more rule to the notebook: no sandwich stories after everyone else was asleep.
