At the nature centre, Oliver picked up a trail card with six empty squares. Each stop on the woodland route had a stamp. Visitors could collect all six and show their finished card at the desk. Oliver liked having a clear task for his walk.
He found the first stamps beside a pond, a bridge and a tall tree. At the fourth stop, the stamp box was empty. Oliver checked the sign and looked carefully around the wooden stand. There was no stamp, so he continued along the marked route.
By the end, his card had five pictures and one empty square. At the desk, he explained what had happened. The assistant thanked him for reporting the missing stamp. She had a spare one in a drawer and used it to complete his card.
Oliver expected a prize, but the finished card itself was the souvenir. He looked again at its six tiny pictures and remembered each stop. Before leaving, he wrote the date on the back. Then he put it inside his map rather than folding it into his pocket.
