Near the park café, a large chessboard was painted on the ground. The pieces were almost as tall as Vera's knees. She knew the rules of chess but had never played with pieces she needed both hands to carry across a board.
An older player invited her to join a game. Vera agreed and chose the white pieces. From her side of the board, she could not see everything clearly. She walked around the edge before each move to check what the other player could do.
A few visitors stopped to watch. One tried to suggest a move, but Vera politely asked to choose for herself. She moved a piece and then noticed her mistake. Her opponent waited while she looked at the board, but they continued without changing the move.
Vera lost the game after half an hour. She helped return the pieces to their starting places and asked when people usually played there. The player said Saturday mornings were busiest. Vera could bring her brother next week; he liked chess and spent too much time playing it indoors.
