The science museum had a new room about light. In the middle, a lamp faced a white screen. Visitors could stand between them and watch their shadows. A museum worker asked Fatima to try making her shadow as large as possible.
Fatima stretched her arms and stood on her toes, but the shadow changed only a little. She thought she needed to jump. The worker suggested walking slowly towards the lamp instead, while staying behind the marked safety line on the floor.
As Fatima moved closer to the lamp, her shadow grew across the screen. Her friend laughed and stood farther away to make a much smaller shadow beside it. They looked like a giant and a tiny person although they were almost the same height.
Then they changed places and compared the result. Fatima read the short explanation on the wall after trying the activity. The words made more sense now. She left the room with a drawing of both positions in her notebook, so she could explain the difference to her younger cousin.
