A sign outside the local history museum said 'Free entry'. Inside, Adrian saw a clear box beside the desk. Several visitors were putting coins into it. He wondered whether the sign outside was old and everyone now had to pay.
Adrian asked the volunteer how much a ticket cost. She explained that there was no ticket price. The box was for donations, and visitors could choose whether to give money. The museum also sold postcards and books to support its work.
He had enough money for his bus home and a sandwich, but not much more. The volunteer welcomed him without asking for anything. Adrian spent an hour looking at maps showing how the town had changed during the last hundred years.
Before leaving, he noticed a message asking residents for old street photographs. His family had several at home. He asked for an email address so he could contact the museum about them. He left with the address on a card and kept his bus money in his pocket.
